Sometimes, you need to test a system or application but do not know the requirements. This can happen if you join the testing late in the game or if you are an external person brought in for (more) independent testing. Still, you can test the system or application with little or no requirements. Here are some ideas on how to test without requirements?
1 Test the basics
- Does the app launch?
- Does the app accept user input?
- Does the state of the app change on giving user input?
- Does each control in the app work?
- Is it possible to copy/ paste data to/ from the app?
- Does the app close?
2 Test the functionality
- Is it possible to perform the tasks promised by the app?
- Does the app perform the same as explained in the help?
3 Test the user interface
- Does each control have a consistent look and feel?
- Is each label or text spelt correctly?
- Is each control aligned correctly?
- Does the app show all the displayed data?
4 Also, test with the help of the following resources
- A knowledge transfer (from Business Analyst/ Product Manager/ Project Manager/ Developers or via Business Requirements/ Design Documents) regarding the application
- Prior versions of the app
- Older requirements specifications
- Past bug reports or customer complaints
- Installation guide and release notes
- Your domain/ industry knowledge
- Laws/ statutory requirements that must be satisfied by the app
- Your creativity
